If you have ever dreamed of enjoying top destinations without the peak-season prices or crowds, then shoulder season travel might be your new best friend.
What is Shoulder Season?
Shoulder season refers to the time just before or after peak travel periods. Think of it as the "sweet spot,"not too busy, not too expensive, and often filled with just as much magic. While timing varies by destination, shoulder season usually means spring or fall months when school is in session and weather is still pleasant.
Here is why shoulder season travel is ideal and how to make the most of it.
Cruises During Shoulder Season
Alaska (Shoulder Season: May & September)
Cruising Alaska in early May or late September can be a breathtaking experience. These months often bring lower fares, fewer crowds, and an extra chance of wildlife sightings. September may even gift you with the Northern Lights!

Caribbean (Shoulder Season: Late April–early June & September–early November)
Avoid the spring break and holiday rush by cruising the Caribbean in shoulder season. While it overlaps with hurricane season, flexible travelers who purchase travel insurance can enjoy serious savings and warm weather with fewer crowds.
I have cruised in April 2024 and April 2025 out of Miami and the weather was great! Not too hot.
Travis and I cruised during Veterans Day November 2018 and we had no rain!

Mexican Riviera (Shoulder Season: May & October)
These months offer fantastic weather, fewer travelers, and great cruise deals. It is ideal for those wanting a peaceful and relaxing vacation without the spring break chaos or winter rush.

Mediterranean (Shoulder Season: April–May & September–October)
The Mediterranean is magical year-round, but shoulder season offers comfortable temperatures, fewer crowds in places like Rome or Barcelona, and lower airfare. You still get sunshine, sea breezes, and stunning coastal views, just with more elbow room and less heat.
I did a Mediterranean cruise September 2014 from Venice to Barcelona on Norwegian Spirit. Still trying to find the pictures lol This was before Google Photos..
Theme Parks in Shoulder Season
Disneyland & Disney World
Visiting during January–early March or late August–early October can help you skip the holiday chaos and enjoy shorter wait times. Bonus: hotel prices and ticket demand tend to dip during these months. Be flexible with weekdays and avoid holiday weekends to get the best experience.
We have gone to After Hours events at Disneyland like Sweethearts Nite in February 2024 and highly recommend it as it has a limited capacity.

Living in Florida, we have been able to experience Disney World throughout the year and the crowds and weather were amazing January to early March. Once Spring Break and May hit, you need a personal fan and people are coming!!
Universal Studios Hollywood & Orlando
The shoulder months (September, early November, and late January) are hidden gems. You will find less foot traffic and easier access to top rides. The weather is still great, and you will likely catch seasonal events like Halloween Horror Nights or early holiday decorations!

Escorted Tours
Whether you are exploring Italy, Japan, or the U.S. National Parks, escorted tours during shoulder season offer fewer crowds at popular landmarks, more personalized attention from tour guides, and a more relaxed pace overall.
Tour operators often run shoulder-season specials, and with fewer participants, you will feel like you are on a semi-private trip.

Tips for Booking During Shoulder Season
-
Be Flexible
Shifting your travel dates by even a week or two can yield major savings and better availability. If your schedule allows, aim for mid-week departures or returns. -
Book Early, but Not Too Early
Shoulder season deals do not always last. Booking 6–9 months ahead gives you the best chance at early bird specials, especially for cruises and tours. -
Use a Travel Advisor (That is US!)
We help you spot shoulder season sweet spots, monitor price drops once you book, and personalize your experience to avoid the crowds without missing the fun. I can even recommend itineraries where you’ll feel like a VIP for less.
Final Thoughts
Shoulder season is not just a budget-friendly option. It is a travel-savvy move. With fewer lines, quieter attractions, and more room to breathe, you will have a richer and more meaningful experience. Whether you are cruising the fjords of Alaska, riding Space Mountain without a long wait, or strolling through Europe’s iconic cities, going “off-peak” may be the highlight of your year.
